Payson rolls to Region 8 wrestling title Uintah crowned three champs with Colby Christensen (119), Damon Mele (135) and Taylor Merkley (140). Christensen was named as the outstanding wrestler in the lower weight classes.
Team results: First Day Torrington - won Rifle - won Centaurus - won Evenston -won (Damon Mele pinned Brandon Short, 3:02) Second Day: Green River - lost 38 – 28. Douglas - won 34 – 31. Cheyenne Central - lost 40 – 24. "Utes wrestlers Colby Christensen and Damon Mele were selected to the Best of the Best competition at the end of the tournament, and both ended up pinning their opponents, and were named the Best of the Best in their respective weight classes."

January 8th & 9th Uintah had two winners – Damon Mele (135)and Coby Christensen (119) Tournament of Champions crowns success Vernal Express Mele took first in the 135 lbs. weight class. ““He had a solid performance,” said Stensgard. “He wrestled well all through the entire tournament. He has a great stand-up, and wrestles strong.”
After Red & White, Utes wrestle duals, and learn Vernal Express Stensgaard also praised Damon Mele, a returning state champion who went 8-2 in the event. “He’s so good that we can move him around, and wrestle him against bigger wrestlers and he is still competitive,” said Stensgaard. (Damon missed the Red and White Ute dual because of the death of his Grandma Mele.)

No. 11 Carmel crowns three champions and advances two other wrestlers to the New Castle Semistate. Southmont – upset winner of the team regional at North Montgomery three days ago – also wins three titles and advances three runners-up. Of note was No. 6 Fountain Central’s Derick Minick staying unbeaten at 39-0 by downing No. 7 Josh Hale of Westfield in the heavyweight finals.

Meanwhile, Fishers sophomore Damon Mele made history, as he became the first ever HCC champion for the Tigers wrestling program. Mele did that in style, as he won the 135-pound match with a second-period pin of ninth-ranked Zionsville junior Dusty Youngs. “It feels pretty good. Building tradition is our No. 1 thing at Fishers, so it just feels good to help in that part,” the 20th-ranked Mele said. “I was just doing my inside reverse and caught him off guard and got lucky and took him to his back.”

No. 9 Carmel won with 296, while Westfield finished second with 234, and Zionsville was third with 217. Damon Mele won the 130-pound championship while Brad Farrel placed third at 135.
